前々回に、関係代名詞の「主格」「目的格」を説明しました。

簡単にまとめると以下の通りです。

[主格の関係代名詞]
先行詞が人：who
先行詞が物：which

[目的格の関係代名詞]
先行詞が人：whom (who)
先行詞が物：which

実は、主格と目的格の場合、上記以外にthatやwhatが使えます。

本日は関係代名詞のthatとwhatを説明します。

【関係代名詞のthat】

関係代名詞のthatはとても簡単です。
主格・目的格ともに人/物で使う関係代名詞が違っていましたが（who(m)/which）、thatは先行詞が人・物、両方に使えます。

***主格の場合***

以下は主格の関係代名詞でthatを使った例です。
先行詞が物なので、thatはそのままwhichに置き換え可能です。

I booked the restaurant [that had two stars (in the Michelin Guide)].
(S)　(V)　　　(O)　　　　　[(V)　(O)]

「ミシュランガイドで2つ星を獲得したレストランを予約した」

次に、先行詞が人の例です。
以下の文章は、thatはそのままwhoに置き換え可能です。

The police officer arrested the man [that stole a wallet (from an old woman)].
・・・(S)　　　　(V)　　　(O)　　　　[(V)　(O)]

「警察はお婆さんの財布を盗んだ男を逮捕した」

***目的格の場合***

目的格の場合も同じく、先行詞が人でも物でもwhom/whichをthatに置き換えできます。また、省略可能です（口語では省略することの方が多いです）

This is the toy robot [(that) my son like].
(S)　(V)　(C)　　　　　　　[(S)　(V)]

「これは息子が好きなおもちゃのロボットです」

・I‘ll tell you anything [(that) I know].
(S/助)(V)(O)　　(O)　　　　[(S)(V)]

「私が知っていることならなんでも言います」

that or who(whom)/whichのどちらをを使うかですが、who(whom)/whichの方がフォーマルなニュアンスが出ますので、ビジネスなど、お固い文書のライティングの際はwho(whom)/whichを使うと良いと思います。

【関係代名詞のwhat】

主格、目的格ともにwhatを関係代名詞として使えます。
“what”は”the thing(s) that”として置き換え可能です。
what一語で先行詞を含んでいますので、ぱっと見先行詞は欠けた文章になります。

***主格の場合***

What [makes me happy] is delicious foods.
・(S)　[(V)　(O)　(C)]　(V)　　(C)

「私を幸せな気分にさせてくれるのは、美味しい食べ物です」

What [makes me happy] = The thing [that makes me happy]　と読み替え可能です。

***目的格の場合***

This book is (exactly) what [I was looking for]. Thank you.
・(S)　　(V)　　　　(C)　[(S)　(V)]

「この本はまさに私が探していた本です。ありがとう」

What [I was looking for] = The thing [that I was looking for]　と読み替え可能です。

What [we should do] is sending a correct shipment (to the customer) (as soon) (as possible).

「我々がすべきことは、正しい荷物をできるだけ早く顧客に送ることだ」

What [we should do] = The thing [that we should do]　と読み替え可能です。

両方とも主格と目的格のみで、所有格のwhoseの代わりに使うことはできないので、注意してくださいね。

Today’s Idiom:

“contrary to popular belief/opinion”

There are times when we are having conversations with our peers and they mention something they’ve heard from someone else or a generalization (一般化) they picked up somewhere, but you know yourself that what they just said is not entirely true. In those times, you can start your justification (正当化) or your opinion, with this phrase.

Here’s a sample conversation:

A: I heard that it’s hot in the Philippines all year!

B: That’s somewhat (幾分) true, but contrary to popular opinion, from November to February, it’s actually cool there.

A:  Oh, I see. Then I should visit it in those months!

As you can see, person B partially (部分的) agreed with what person A said, but in the second half of person B’s sentence, they gave them their opinion and started with the idiom we are talking about today.

下の会話の「単語」だけを見てください。知らない単語はありますか？

A : You wanna put your money where your mouth is?

B : 10 bucks says that when he talks about Judy different story.

A：All right, you’re on.

あえていうなら、bucks = ドル、くらいで、知らない単語自体はほぼないと思います。

ところが、正直、意味はほとんどわからないのではないでしょうか？

背景は、元警官Bが、ある男はいつも集会（パートナーを亡くした人たちが順番に話をする会）で奥さん（Judy）について嘘をついている、というのに対しAさんが、じゃぁ、金かけるか？という場面。

まさにネイティブの英会話という感じですが、ポイントは

「基礎語のイメージを理解する」

今回は、Put, Say, On でしょう。

Put や Sayは、辞書で調べれば、金を賭けるという場面で使えることはわかるのですが

そんなの全部暗記していられないですよね？

Put のコアイメージは、「何かをどこかに位置させる」

“put your money”は、お金を位置させる

どこにか？というと、”where your mouth is” （あんたの言ってること）

あんたが言ってることに、お金を位置させられ（=賭ける）ますか？

つまり “その言葉にお金賭ける”

Say のコアイメージは、「話の内容自体を言う」

“10 bucks says that”

“10ドルがそのこと(that)を言うだろう”

そのこと？なんのこと？

そう、that も、単語は知っていても会話ではけっこうクセモノなんですよ！

なんのことでしょう？

ここでは、あの男がいつもJudyについて嘘をつくことです。

ですので、10 bucks says that は

”１０ドルが、あいつは嘘をついてる、と言うよ”

”when he talks about Judy different story”

“彼が、ジュディーについていつもと違う話をした時”

ここのセリフを直訳すると

“１０ドルが、あいつは嘘をついている、と言うよ、彼がジュディーについていつもと違う話をした時”

これは日本人にはめっちゃくちゃイメージしづらいですが、

これで、”あいつは嘘をついているに10ドル賭ける” と言う日本語訳になるんですね。

以前、日本語と英語の視点の違いをFBにも書きましたが、まさにそれです。

“100 bucks says his girl friend is cheating on him.” （あいつは彼女に浮気されてるに１００ドル賭けるね）

On のコアイメージは「接触」

“You’re on” は、相手の挑戦や提案に対し “よし、乗った！” （その提案に接触してる状態になる）と言う時に使うのですが・・・

ここが、また最後の難関。

誰が、その提案に乗った（接触する）のか？

相手の挑戦に「私が」乗るんだから、”I’m on” とか言いたくないですか？

なのに、英語ではこの場合 “You”re on”

ここは「私」から離れて、また二人の状況を上から神になってみてください。

A が私に提案して、で、私は色々チョイスがある中で、

「Aと同意すること」

を選んだのです。

つまり、Aを乗せてあげる（提案に）

だから、A is on.　ここでのAはYouですよね。

なので、You’re on.

例）

“Let’s arm-wrestle” （腕相撲しようぜ）
“You’re on” （やったろうじゃないの）

I’m on は、I’m on it で、今やってるよ！と言う場面でよく使います。

“the balloon has gone up”

When you’re in a situation that could potentially get worse and it actually did, this is the idiom you could use in that situation. Here’s a sample conversation:

A: You know how I told you I might lose my job because of the current pandemic?

B: Yeah, we talked about that last week.. any updates?

A:  Yeah, well, I got fired and the balloon has gone up, I also found out that I don’t have much money saved..

So the first bad event was “A” losing his/her job, and then the balloon went up because he/she actually did lose his/her job AND also, he found out that he doesn’t much savings.

今回は関係代名詞の第2回目です。
前回の主格・目的格につづき、所有格について説明します。

【所有格とは？】

関係代名詞の所有格を考える前に、普通の代名詞の所有格について考えてみましょう。

たとえば、代名詞”I”の所有格”my”は、名詞〇〇にくっついて「私の〇〇」という意味になります。

I love my parents.
(S)(V)　(O)

「私は（私の）両親を愛しています」

代名詞が”he”なら所有格は”his”、”she”なら”her”、”John”なら”John’s”ですね。

名詞”city”なら”city’s”などで、無限に作れます。

The city’s mayor is planning to hold a big event (for attracting tourists).
・・(S)　　　　　　(V)　　　　　(O)

「（この都市の）市長は、観光客を引き付けるために大きなイベントを開催することを計画しています。」

関係代名詞の所有格whoseも、関係代名詞節の中で同じような働きをします。

【関係代名詞の所有格とは】

まず例文を見てみましょう。

I know the John [whose favorite musician is Lenny Kravitz].
(S)(V)　　(O)　　　　　　　[(S)　　　(V)　　(C)]

「私が知っているのは、Lenny Kravitzが好きなジョンです」

上の文は以下の2つの文を、関係代名詞whoseを使って合体させた物です。
①I know John.
②John’s favorite musician is Lenny Kravitz.

②を見ると、所有格”John’s”があります。
例文を見ると、所有格が関係代名詞節内で、whoseに置き変わっているのがわかると思います。

※ちょっと不自然な文に見えるかもしれませんが、周囲にJohnという名前の人がいっぱいいて、どのJohnを知っているのか聞かれたようなシチュエーションでこのようにいうことができます。「複数いる中で、そのJohn」ということで、Theが付いています。

物を先行詞にした例も見てみましょう。
主格や目的格と違って、所有格では人でも物でもwhoseを使うことができます。

Can you see the house [whose roof is red]?
(助)　(S)(V)　　(O)　　　　　[(S)(V)(C)]

「屋根が赤い家が見えますか？」

この文も2つに分解してみましょう
①Can you see the house?
②The house’s roof is red.

やはり②で所有格の部分が、例文内でwhoseに置き換わっていますね。

【所有格の関係代名詞節の特徴】

主格や目的格では、関係代名詞節内の主語や目的語が先行詞になるため、[ 　]内の主語や目的語が欠けた不完全な文章になります。

***主格***

[ 　]内で主語(S)が欠ける。

Can you see the factory [which has four chimneys]?
(助)(S)　(V)　　(O)　　　　　[(V)　　(O)]

「4本の煙突がある工場が見えますか？」

しかし、所有格では、関係代名詞節内がSVOCの欠けていない完璧な文になります。

***所有格***

[ 　]内は完璧な第2文型SVC。

Can you see the house [whose roof is red]?
(助)(S)　(V)　　(O)　　　　　[(S)(V)(C)]

「屋根が赤い家が見えますか？」

本日は所有格について説明しました。

言語の基本として

「違う単語は意味が違う」

というのがあります。

例えば、about と around.

約〜、とか、周りとか、大体〜とか

そのように両方とも日本語に訳されますよね？

なので、要は同じ単語だろう！と、私も思っていましたし、

また、ここが重要なのですが

「ネイティブに聞いても、両者の違いははっきり答えてくれない」

それくらい、ほとんど一緒とされている単語です。

ところが、彼らは大体同じと言いながら「直感的に」は区別しているのです。

しかし、我々学習者が直感的に理解することは不可能です。

ですから

「言葉のコアのイメージをつかむ」

これがとても大切になってきます。

じゃぁ、about, around はどう違うのか？

簡単にいえば

around ＝　周囲をぐるりと回る

about ＝　〜の周辺

大体１時くらい、という場合は

around 1 o’clock も about 1 o’clock も両方使えます。

ただ、

talk about A

こちらは、Aの周辺について話す　→　Aについて話す、という意味になりますが

talk around A

と言った場合は、Aの周りを回ってAには到達しないので

「Aについては、避けて話す」

と、全然違う意味になります。

また、「あなたは？」の意味で

How about you? What about you?

（あなたの周辺はどんな感じ？というイメージ）

これは言いますが、How around you? What around you?

これだと、あなたの周りをぐるっと回る感じ（？）を聞いているようで

意味を為しません。

I’ll go around といえば、回り道をしていくよ、となりますし

Go about your business といえば、自分の仕事（の周辺）をやってろよ（余計なこっちの世話やくな）

このような言い方ができます。

これらも「コアイメージ」を意識すれば、なんとなく感覚として理解できるのではないでしょうか？
