先日、上野動物園に行ってきました。

上野動物園の動物たちの案内看板の中には、英語表記のものもあり、英語の勉強に最適です！

ちなみに「動物園」を英語で言うと「zoo」です。上野動物園は「Ueno Zoo」です。

上野動物園のパンフレットには、下記のように書かれています。

This zoo has the longest history of any zoo in Japan, having first opened its doors in 1882.
上野動物園は日本で最も古い歴史のある動物園。1882年に開園。

Located in the heart of Tokyo. It gives visitors the chance to meet a wide variety of animals from all over the world.
東京の中心に位置し、世界中の多種多様な動物たちとの出会いの場を提供しています。

1882年に開園！ 調べたら明治15年です。そんな長い歴史があったんですね。

facebookの方の「英語を楽しく学ぶコラム」では上野動物園の「ホッキョクグマ」をご紹介しましたが、こちらでは「カンガルー」の案内看板をご紹介。

「カンガルーのジャンプ The Kangaroo’s Jump」

The kangaroo moves from one place to another by hopping on their hindlimbs.
カンガルーは走るときには後ろ足で跳躍します。

※hindlimb（s）後ろ足。「前足」は「forelimb（s）」

It is said that the maximum speed is 48km/h and its hopping distance can reach 5-7m.
最高時速は48km、跳躍距離では5〜7m。という記録があります。

As for the height, there is a record saying that one kangaroo has jumped a bunch of wood that is 3.2 high and a fence that is 2.7 high.
高さでは、約3.2mの材木の山を飛び越えたり、2.7mの垣根を超えたりした記憶が残っています。

この日は猛暑で動物たちが活動しておりませんでした！
カンガルーも奥でぐったりしていました……。

動物園は楽しかったですけれど、もうちょっと涼しくなってから行かれることをオススメします！
