「多聴多読」オンラインプリズン!Extensive Reading Online-Prison

Purpose : Let students have time to focus on Extensive Reading.

*Japanese English learners have not been instructed to spend their most of time on Extensive Reading (ER). However, according to SLA studies, Second Language Acquisition, students should have more time on ER, more than Intensive Reading (IR). Japanese English education style is totally opposite.

*ER = Read or listen to students’ favorite materials, which they can understand at least more than 70%, without looking into a dictionary or repeating the same sentences. Students just focus on reading as Extensive as possible. Japanese students always stop on unfamiliar words. So we have to advise them not to stop reading.

*IR = Try to understand passages thoroughly with dictionary. Students will also be advised to read aloud what they’ve just read a couple of times.

___

1, Use TEAMS or ZOOM

*Teams https://www.microsoft.com/ja-jp/microsoft-teams/log-in

*ZOOM must be updated version. If not, it will shut down in 40 min and have to wait for 10 min to log in again. It really sucks.

2, Time line

A: 25 min Extensive Reading

*Share the screen of an online alarm

*Ask all students to turn off their mic

*Students can ask questions through a chat window. But during ER, they shouldn’t stop reading. So it’s preferable not to ask any questions. You can tell them about it.

*During ER, you also turn off the mic and can do your thing. But please keep your TEAMS or ZOOM page on your screen to check if someone ask you something. Your camera must be on.

*When ER time has done, turn your mic on and let students know it’s the end of ER time.

B: 5 min break(Students can ask questions this time)

*Turn on your mic and camera
