本日も
皆さんが
ビジネスにおいて
役に立ちそうな表現を
ご紹介致します。

 

 

1． 「頑張って！」

△       Good luck!
〇 　 I’m pulling for you.

 

ビジネスにおいて、

「Good luck‼」

は、カジュアル過ぎてしまいます。

場合によっては、
皮肉に
捉えられてしまう
こともありますので、
お気をつけください。

 

一方で、

pull for … : …を応援する

という熟語を使用して、

「I’m pulling for you.」

と言えば、
「I」を主語にしていますし、
相手の事を気にかけて、
応援したいという気持ちを
伝える事ができます。

 

 

2． 「今度はうまくいきますように。」

△ 　 Better luck next time.
〇 　 Your time will come.

 

「Better luck next time.」

は、日本人が好んで使用しているのを
良く耳にしますが、
この表現は、正直、
古臭く、
そして、
状況を軽視しているように
聞こえます。

 

しかし、
「Your time will come.」の場合、

より知的で
思慮深い印象を与えます。

状況や相手の事を
真剣に考えており、
さらに、
相手への信頼も伝わるので、
遥かにポジティブで
相手からも良い反応を
得る事が可能でしょう。

 

他にも

「Your chance will come.」

「You will get the next one.」

も良い表現でしょう。

 

 

3． 「あきらめないで！」

△　  Don’t give up!
〇       You’ll get there!

「Don’t give up!」は、

実は、良い表現です。

しかし、
ビジネスになると、
この表現は避けることを
お薦め致します。

 

少しカジュアル過ぎるのと、

“Don’t“
を使用していますので、
ネガティブな印象になり、
場合によっては、
少々、
嫌みっぽく聞こえてしまいます。

 

よって、
「You’ll get there.」

と表現すれば、
肯定文ですので、
ポジティブな印象を与え、

また、
相手への信頼も
含まれるニュアンスですので、
こちらの表現を
お薦め致します。

他にも

「Stay with it and stay pasitive.」

も良いでしょう。

 

 

いかがでしょうか？

とても簡単な表現ですが、
ビジネスになると
ニュアンスが
変わってきたりしますので、
皆さんも

2021年1月20日（現地時間）、米民主党のジョー・バイデン氏が第46代大統領に正式に就任しました。バイデン新大統領の就任演説から一部をピックアップしてご紹介します。

米大統領の演説は、もちろん難しい単語やフレーズもあるけれど、けっこう聞き取りやすい方だと思います。英語学習のよい教材になります。私は英文を見ながら何度も聞いて、さらには自分でも声に出して言う練習を続けています。

日本人の「恥かきビジネス英語」

今回は、第19弾です。

 

ビジネスで

相手に気遣った言葉を

かける際、

失礼にならないように

声かけするのって、

意外に

「何て言えば良いのだろう？」

と、悩んだことはありませんか？

 

本日は、

そのような時に

使用すると良い表現を

ご紹介致します。

 

  

1． 「心配しすぎないで。」

 

△ 　Don’t worry too much.

〇 　Try to stay positive.

  

日本人は、

「worry」という語を

使用するのが

とても好きですが、

 

以前にもお伝えしましたが、

 

「worry」とは、ネガティブな言葉ですし、

「Don‘t」も否定形ですので、

 

ダブルでネガティブな印象を与えます。

 

ビジネスでは、

ネガティブな語や表現は避け、

ポジティブに会話を進めましょう。

そうすることで、

失礼に思われることも

軽減できます。

  

他にも、 

Keep a positive outlook.

なども良い表現です。

 

  

2． 「心配することは何もありません。」

 

△　 There is nothing to worry about.

〇       There is no cause for concern.

  

恐れや不安といった

ネガティブなイメージの

「worry」を使用せず、

 

論理的 かつ 理性的な印象を与える

「concern」を使用するほうが

とても良いです。

 

cause for concern：

懸念材料、懸念の種

 

この表現は、

真剣なビジネス志向を

表しています。

 

よって、

知的な印象が強くなり、

ビジネスマンらしくなります。

 

  

3． 「大した事ではありません。」

 

△      It’s not a big deal.

〇 　 It’s something we can get past. 

 

「It’s not a big deal.」は、

事態を真剣に考えていない

ニュアンスが含まれます。

 

一方で、 

 

get past：克服する

 

を使用する事で、

きちんと考えており、

とても

プロフェッシャルな

表現になります。

 

他にも 

You can handle it. 

なども

とても良い表現です。

ビジネスでは、

仕事だけ

こなしていれば良いと

いう訳にもいかず、

些細な気遣いなど、

コミュニケーション能力も

必要不可欠ですが、

そこで

失礼になってしまったら、

そもそも

英語を話すだけでも

大変なのに、

更に

人間関係の修復が

とても大変で、

嫌気が刺すと

思います。

 

ですので、

そのようなことが

少しでもないように

未然に防ぐ術を

比較6　比較を使った様々な表現①　原級編

こんにちは！

 

比較は日常会話の中や、英語のビジネスメールなど、様々なシチュエーションで使われています。

今日からは、そのような比較を使った様々な表現について説明します！

本日は原級編です。

 

【as ~ as one can】

 

まずは“as ~ as one can”を紹介します。

意味は「できるだけ〜」で、この表現、特にメールなどでとても多用します！
まずは“as soon as ~”のパターンを見ていきましょう。

 

[例1]
We will respond you as soon as we can.
できるだけ早く対応させていただきます。

 

このように、”soon”を入れると「できるだけ早く〜します」と言う意味になります。

“as soon as possible”でも同じ意味になります。
メールなどでは“ASAP”と省略されて使われることもあります。

 

[例2]
Could you call me as soon as possible?
できるだけ早くお電話いただけませんか？

 

[例3]
Help me ASAP! I can’t login to the system.
できるだけ早く助けてください！ システムにログインできません。

 

次に“as much as one can”のパターンを見ていきましょう。
こちらは「できるだけ頑張る」の意味になります。

 

[例4]
I’ll do as much as I can.
できる限りがんばります。

 

他にも、「できるだけ多くの〜」としたいのであれば“as many ~ as possible”とすればOKです。

 

[例5]
We should consider as many samples as possible.
できるだけ多くのサンプルを検討するべきです。

 

このように、“as ~ as one can (possible)”の形はとても応用が効く上、「できる限り頑張ってる感」を演出できるのでビジネス英語では必須とも言えます。覚えておいて損はないでしょう。

 

【not so much A as B】

 

“not so much A as B”は「AというよりむしろB」と言う意味になります。

「AとB、両方当てはまるがどちらかというとB」を表します。

 

[例6]
He is not so much a guitarist as a musician.
彼は、ギタリストというより音楽家です。

 

これは”not so much as V”とは違うので注意してください。

こちらは「〜さえしない」の意味になります。

 

[例7]
He didn’t so much as wash the dishes.
彼は皿洗いすらしませんでした。

 

【might as well ~ (as …)】

 

“might as well ~ (as …)”は「…するくらいなら〜したほうがマシだ」という意味で、諦めのニュアンスが含まれています。

 

[例8]
We might as well go home and get some sleep as waste time here.
ここで時間を無駄にするよりは、家に帰って寝ていたほうがましだ。

It was reported that there was a shortage of doctors and nurses who are eligible to give vaccinations. There were no follow-up news regarding that, but instead, this is what came up next: the first batch will be sent here next week, and also, there’s a shortage of syringes that can be used for the COVID-19 vaccines. Apparently, there’s only one, if not a few, kind of syringe that can be used with the vaccine. Japan’s plan would be the same as for other countries, they will first start with frontliners and medical staff, followed by the elderly, then people with preexisting conditions, then everyone else.

「単語の暗記：読んでわかる単語（パッシブワード）を増やした方が良い？」

「単語の暗記：読んでわかる単語（パッシブワード）を増やした方が良い？」

語学は結局のところ暗記と言います。

確かに、ネイティブとネイティブではない我々との差は

間違いなく「語彙力」の差があると思います。

日頃、語彙力を鍛えることはそこまで話せるようになることに直結していない

そのように言っていますが、それは

「まだ話せていない人」

を対象にお伝えすることで、

語学には

「知識」と「流暢さ」

があって、まずは「流暢さ」をつけることが先決です。

そうしないと、いくら単語を覚えても、なかなか実際には喋れないものです。

じゃぁ、単語の暗記はしないで良いのか？

というと、私の意見はやっぱりそこも「してもいいけど・・・」

そういうふうに思うのです。

単語は、文脈の中で生きるものです。

ですから、タクシーなんかでは、そこまっすぐいって「止まって」もらえます？

これが自然で、ここを「停止」だと少し違和感ないでしょうか？

「静止」はもっとおかしいですし、「微動だにしない」

とかを使ってもさらにおかしいわけです。

それぞれ、物が止まっている様を表すとはいえ、やはり文脈のなかでそれが違和感あるのかどうなのか？

そういった「勘」のことを難しい言葉で文法予測能力といったりもするのですが、

要は「大量のInput」を地道に続けることで、なーんとなく、その感覚がつかめてくる。

これが大切だと思っていますので、もしも単語の暗記をしたいのならば、「読んでわかる単語（パッシブワード）」を「文」で増やしていくことがポイントだと考えています。

無理に単語を丸暗記することは、ちょっとショートカットで本当の英語力じゃないような気がするんですよね。

最近買い続けている英語学習者のための月刊誌「CNN English Express」。

興味ある話題がけっこうあって、面白くて読み続けています。

日英表記で書かれている記事の内容は、観光、スポーツ、エンタメ、政治、文化、ビジネス、時事と多義に渡っています。

発売されたばかりのこの3月号では、西洋の書道「カリグラフィー」が特集されていて、もう先月号で予告を見た瞬間に買おうと思ってました。

calligraphy という英単語は、ギリシャ語の「美」を表す kallos と、「書く」を意味する graphein に由来します。

あと、本誌では、先月行われたバイデン米大統領の就任演説も収録されていて、こちらも役立ちます。

「CNN English Expsess」は自分の好きなジャンルの話を取り上げてくれることが多く、「勉強」ではなく「読み物」として、英語に楽しく触れられるのがよいです。

Today’s Youtube Recommendation:

I hear more and more people are now into watching “Let’s Play” videos and I think it’s a great way to unwind on a chill weekend. Personally, I watch them for two reasons: Either I’m too scared to play a horror game, or there’s a video game I’m not good at and in order to be better at it, I watch someone else play. For this week, I recommend “ManlyBadassHero”‘s channel. He has a smooth voice and he mostly plays horror games, so for me, there’s a good balance. He uses easy to understand words and his speaking speed is not very fast, so I think it’s good to learn from watching his videos!

比較の回も今回で5回目ですね。
比較は面白い表現が多いので話題が尽きないです。

 

今日は比較表現の中でも混乱しやすいno more (less) ~ than と not more (less) ~ thanについて説明します！

 

【not more (less) 〜 than】

 

まずは比較的わかりやすい”not more (less) 〜 than”から説明します。

これはnotを抜いた普通の文と比べてみるとわかりやすいと思います。
普通の比較文を単純に否定した意味になるだけです。

 

[例1]
This car is more expensive than that one.
この車はあの車よりも高い。

 

This car is not more expensive than that one.
この車はあの車よりも高くない。

 

では、”no more (less) 〜 than”ではどうでしょうか。

 

【no more (less) 〜 than】

 

“A is no more 〜 than B”の場合、「AはBと同様に〜でない」という、両方を否定する意味になります。

 

[例2]
This car is no more expensive than that one.
この車はあの車と同様に高くない。

 

では“A is no less 〜 than B”の場合はどうなるかというと、moreの場合の逆なので、両方肯定になります。

「AはBと同じか、それ以上に〜だ」と言う意味になります。

 

[例3]
This car is no less expensive than that one.
この車はあの車に劣らず高い。

 

車の例ばかりなので、他にも例を挙げてみます。

 

[例4]
The new method was no more effective than the previous one.
新しい方法は、以前の方法と同様に、効果的ではありませんでした。

 

[例5]
He is no less talkative than his wife.
彼は奥さんにと同じくらいおしゃべりです。

 

[例6]
This matter is no less important than the others.
この問題は他の問題と同じくらい重要です。

【ネイティブではなくナチュラルを目指す】
 
ネイティブレベルの英語は本当に難しいです。
 
無理なんじゃないのか？
 
そう思うこともあります。
 
僕が今でも毎日英語学習するのも、ネイティブレベルに本当の意味でなりたいからで
 
だいぶ上達したと思いつつも
 
まだまだ遠い道のりです。
 
最近、実はあるレベルからは多聴多読がポイントになってくるんじゃないか？
 
と思ってますが、翻訳者が必ずしも英語ペラペラではないのを見ても
 
やはりネイティブレベルというのは中々なハードルなんだと思います。
 
ところが！
 
とりあえず困らずに、意思疎通が世界の人と英語でできる。
 
英語で仕事をこなして、帰国して来られる。
 
つまり
 
ネイティブではなく「ナチュラル」レベルの英語
 
これだったら、案外、多くの人は到達可能だと考えています。
 
そして、私のようにこれを仕事にしてるわけじゃなければ
 
実は「ナチュラル」レベルで、ぜんっぜん問題ありません。
 
発音悪くても、言うほど通じないことないですし、
 
とりあえずSVOで話してればいいんです。
 
無理に関係詞なんか使わないで、シンプルにSVOで話す。
 
あとはジェスチャーと笑顔！
 
大体からして、日本人の英語ディスってくるのは、ほんとに日本人しかいません。
 
たまーにバカにしてくる現地人もいますが、実に狭い世界観の持ち主なので、気にする必要はありません。
 
それならば、集中して3ヶ月、まぁ仕事しながらなら余裕を見て一年もみておけば、十分
 
「ナチュラル」
 
英語は身につけられます。
 
あまり「ネイティブ」にこだわらず、大体ネイティブったってどこのネイティブだ？
 
って話もありますしね。
