2021年1月20日（現地時間）、米民主党のジョー・バイデン氏が第46代大統領に正式に就任しました。バイデン新大統領の就任演説から一部をピックアップしてご紹介します。

わが国の歴史において、今ほど厳しく困難な時代を迎えた人は少ないでしょう。
A once-in-a-century virus that silently stalks the country has taken as many lives in one year as America lost in all of World War II. Millions of jobs have been lost, hundreds of thousands of businesses closed.
100年に1度のウイルスがこの国にひっそりと蔓延し、1年で多くの命を奪いました。第二次世界大戦で犠牲となったアメリカ人に匹敵する数です。何百万人もの人々が職を失い、何十万人もの企業が倒産しました。
A cry for racial justice, some 400 years in the making, moves us. The dream of justice for all will be deferred no longer.
人種差別の公正さを求める声は400年前から続いていて、われわれを突き動かします。すべての人に公正さをもたらすという夢は、これ以上先送りにできません。
A cry for survival comes from the planet itself, a cry that can’t be any more desperate or any more clear.
生き残るための叫びは地球から発せられています。これ以上なく切実ではっきりとした叫びです。
And now, a rise of potential extremism, white supremacy, domestic terrorism, that we must confront and we will defeat.
そして今われわれは、政治的過激主義や白人至上主義、国内テロの台頭に立ち向かい、打ち破らねばなりません。
To overcome these challenges, to restore the soul and secure the future of America, requires so much more than words. It
requires the most elusive of all things in a democracy: unity. Unity.
これら課題を克服して、アメリカの魂を回復し、未来を守るために、言葉以上に重要なものが必要です。民主主義を掲げる国にとって、もっとも達成しがたい結束が必要です。そう「結束」です。

米大統領の演説は、もちろん難しい単語やフレーズもあるけれど、けっこう聞き取りやすい方だと思います。英語学習のよい教材になります。私は英文を見ながら何度も聞いて、さらには自分でも声に出して言う練習を続けています。
